The Age of Enlightenment
Last Thursday, April 29, The Scene, a supplement to Bloomington’s The Herald-Times, published the following curious tidbit. In March, the Georgia House of Representatives voted 160-0 to prohibit piercing of female genitals. This prohibition concerns women of all ages. One of the bill’s sponsors Rep. Bill Heath, when told that some women are eager for such a procedure, said: “What? I’ve never seen such a thing.” This little story was published with a couple other stories under the heading “What Century Are We In?” The other two stories were about attitudes towards gays and lesbians. In Brussels, Belgium, Catholic Cardinal Gustaaf Joos declared that only 5-10% of gays and lesbians are “genuine.” The rest, according to the Cardinal, are “sexual perverts.” Back in the USA, the commissioners of Rhea County, Tenn. voted 8-0 to ask the state to help them keep gays and lesbians out of the county. The vote was later rescinded though.
